Progress at the Speed of Life

This isn’t the #HGC post I intended to write this week. I intended to write something witty and inspiring about not giving up on our goals in month 2 of the new year.

And then life hit.

We made it to inauguration and now I feel like I’m in some kind of cultural-crisis-during-a-pandemic induced hangover. Work has been busy, I’m loving the snow but we’ve still reached the winter dull-drums, and the world around us continues to be a lot of everything.

This week I am starting to feel like I’ve reached the end of this most recent sprint and can breathe again but the mental fog hasn’t quite lifted.

So I sat down to write this week’s post about progress, not perfection and I couldn’t get past the first 2 paragraphs. I had blocked off time in the schedule like I do every week but this week I had zilch.

The brain was just not functioning.

Within 10 minutes of calling it for the night, I fell asleep on the couch and slept for 13 hours. I woke up just in time to get the kids ready for school (thank God!) and we started a new day.

And that, in a nutshell, is kinda the whole point.

We like to kid ourselves into thinking perfection is within reach but the pursuit of perfection is a fool’s errand.

There will always be days when things don’t go according to plan. Days where we hit a mental block, a meeting gets rescheduled at the last minute, a kid needs to be comforted, or our body simply shuts down on us.

These things will always happen because life will always happen.

Perfection is not available to us. Not now. Not ever.

Progress is the action we take in between life happening.

What action will you take this week?
