Even Leaders Get Stressed

A lot is written on stress management and while it is a crucial component of long-term success, that’s not where I want to focus today. Today I want to talk abut how you show up as a leader when you are stressed out.⠀
Let’s be real, the best stress management program and routine in the world is not going to keep stress under control at all times. Stress is part of the human condition. It will become overwhelming at some point. When it does, how does that energy impact your team? ⠀
No one shows up as the best version of themselves when they are stressed. What does that look like for you? Do you communicate less? Do you get short tempered? Do you start expecting people to be available at all hours of the night and weekend? Do you let go of boundaries? Do you fall back to micro-managing? Do you find yourself becoming suspicious of people? Do you stop setting expectations? Do you...?â €
When these things start to happen your team can tell something is up. They can sense the change within you. If you have a deep relationship built on trust they will try to keep things moving forward for you and give you grace and the benefit of the doubt... but they can’t read your mind. If your star performers suddenly seem like they are letting you down left and right, it’s probably time to pause and look inward.⠀
Take a moment to jot down your stress tendencies. It can serve as an important self-reflection activity for personal growth and can help you check yourself when things get especially bad. â €
